Exergy is proud to be one of the winners of the Fortissimo+ initiative, a prestigious European Union-funded program designed to accelerate innovation and enhance business impact by leveraging high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies across European SMEs.
The Fortissimo+ program is part of a wider European strategy to empower small and medium enterprises by providing access to the cutting-edge computational resources of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. This initiative promotes the adoption of HPC and AI as transformative enablers capable of delivering substantial business, economic, and societal benefits. Building on the successes of its predecessors, the Fortissimo+ project series has fostered the creation of over 40 success stories in collaboration with more than 100 partners across 22 countries.
Within this framework, Exergy, alongside its partners EnginSoft Italy and LuxProvide, is leading the EffiSeal project, focused on optimizing the sealing systems of radial outflow turbines (ROT) used in Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power plants. This project targets the reduction of leakage losses through the development and validation of an innovative brush sealing system, benchmarked against traditional labyrinth seals.
By employing advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and real-world experimental testing supported by HPC infrastructure, EffiSeal aims to improve turbine efficiency by up to 3%, thereby strengthening Exergy’s competitive position in the waste heat recovery market. EnginSoft contributes specialized expertise in fluid dynamics and CFD modeling, while LuxProvide supplies the necessary HPC hardware and technical support for demanding parallel computations.
EffiSeal represents a technological advancement by applying brush seal technology to ORC radial outflow turbines for the first time, enabling tighter clearances and reduced leakage compared to conventional sealing methods. This innovative approach, powered by HPC resources, is expected to deliver sealing solutions that enhance energy efficiency and reduce power losses.
